Let's Go Shopping...For A Dressmaker!

Compliments of Elaine Lohrman, Custom Gowns Design Studio

If after months of searching you still have not found the wedding dress of your dreams, perhaps it is time for go shopping for a dressmaker. Using a custom dressmaker has many advantages, not the least of which is the ability to combine all of your favorite features into one perfect gown. In looking for the person who can make that dream a reality consider the following:

Training and Experience - Where and with whom did the dressmaker train? How long has the dressmaker been involved in creating bridal fashions? Do they specialize in bridal? What professional affiliations do they have?

Quality of Work - Will anyone other than the dressmaker be working on your gown? Ask to see samples of the dressmaker's work. Are the fabrics and construction the same quality you are looking for in a bridal gown?

References - Ask for a list of references. The list should include several clients who have had bridal gowns made by the dressmaker in the last 8-12 months.

Compatibility - You will be spending many hours with the dressmaker. Take time to visit in the initial consultation. Are you compatible? Do you feel comfortable with this person? Is it easy to communicate your vision of the perfect gown?

Accessibility - Where is the studio located? Are the hours flexible enough to accommodate you busy schedule?

Price - Seamstresses charge from $10-$25 an hour plus the cost of fabric. A couture dressmaker will either charge $25-$100 an hour plus fabric, or may charge a flat fee of several thousand dollars plus the cost of fabric. Ask to see a copy of the contract. Does it spell out in full all services for which you are hiring the dressmaker, including a delivery date?

Getting started is as easy as visiting the listing of dressmakers elsewhere in this website. You may also visit the Professional Association of Custom Clothiers (PACC) website at www.paccprofessionals.org. Don't wait too long!
