Can a friend perform our ceremony who got ordained over the internet?

1. Is it legal for him to go through with marrying me and my fiance?
2. Does he need proof that he is ordained?
3. Can I turn our proof of marriage certificate into my township after I am married?

Your best bet is to go to your town hall and talk with a marriage registrar there about this. You have to apply for your marriage license there in person anyway, so it's a wise move to stop in now and check your township's requirements regarding your license and who may legally marry you. Find out what the latest rules are, and if you don't get straight answers from the clerk, then go to your county courthouse for the final word on whether this particular ordination site is recognized as valid by the state. Your friend should have gotten some sort of certificate when he signed on, so get a copy of that and bring it to the marriage license authorities in your area for an official okay.

I suggest going to the marriage registrar office rather than calling (which you could also do if you wish), since you're much more likely to get better 'customer service' when you're standing in front of the clerk. Know that they get asked this question all the time and probably have a list of answers for you.

Be very careful about online 'get ordained' sites, as some of them may not be legitimate, and the state has the final word on what's okay and what's not.

After the ceremony, you'll turn in your signed marriage license with the township, with all details covered.

Best of luck to you, and I'm sure the answer you get will make you feel a lot better! :)
