OK, here's the short version...
We are both Yankee fans! Alex
and I went to Baltimore for the weekend to see a Yankees/Orioles
game and celebrate our 5-year "anniversary" (August
16, 2003). We had planned this anniversary weekend the day Yankees
tickets went on sale in March 2003. We had just moved in together
and had NO money (or so I thought) so I was not expecting any
proposals. We always exchange cards and/or small gifts on our
anniversaries. On the morning of the 16th, we woke up, both in
a great mood and enjoying our beautiful view of the Camden Yards.
Alex had a medium-sized gift bag for me, but did not want to
give it to me in the hotel because he "didn't want to exchange
gifts in a hotel room". This was a reasonable excuse - the
night before, when we arrived, we went for a walk and saw a beautiful
place to take pictures. He wanted to give me my gift there. On
the 16th, we woke up and went to lunch at ESPN Zone. The ESPN
Zone has daily news clips as part of their menu. I told Alex
I wanted it since it was our anniversary and it had the date.
He asked the waitress if we could have it and told her why. She
said we could have it and then said "5 years - are you engaged?"
I said "no" and she looked at alex and said "you
better hurry up!" I reassured him and told him that I knew
we had no money and there was no rush because I knew we would
get married , etc... Little did I know, my ring was in the gift
bag that was next to him!
After lunch, we went for a
walk and passed by the paddle boats. I love the water and the
night before we had said we would go on the paddle boats the
next day. So, we stood in line for this big green dinosaur boat.
Once we were on the boat and in the middle of the harbor, Alex
said "I'll give you your gift here" (which was his
plan all along). He handed me a scrapbook that he made which
contained pictures, cards, theatre stubs, vacation memos, pictures
from highschool (when we were just friends), etc. I was crying
as I read all of the cards we had given eachother and pictures
we had taken over the years. I still had no clue!!!!! Then, he
said "when you get to the last page, hand it to me".
On the last page was a poem that he had written for me that talked
about our years together. It was so beautiful. I'm bawling at
this point and still have no clue since it is our anniversary.
He read the poem to me and the last lines were: "And as
this chapter comes to a close, let's begin the next one as I
propose. Honey, will you marry me?" I couldn't breathe!
It took me several minutes before I even realized what had happened.
He was looking at me saying "Honey, does that mean yes?"
Of course I said yes and he put the ring on my finger! The people
around us noticed and were all saying congratulations. One group
offered to take our picture for us, so we have our one "engagement
picture" on the boat in the Baltimore Harbor!
It was so wonderful, so unexpected,
so romantic!
