A Guide to Changing Your Wedding Date

A Guide to Changing Your Wedding Date

Couples who had planned a wedding for spring, summer or even early fall of 2020 may find themselves in the difficult position of changing their wedding date due to COVID-19.

If you and your fiancé are changing your wedding date, here are the steps you’ll need to take, as well as a few important things to keep in mind.

Step 1: Choose your new date (and be open to a weekday or afternoon wedding).

If you’re flexible on date and timing, a weekday or afternoon wedding can be a great alternative to the standard Saturday night affair. Not only do vendors and venues typically have more availability during the week (or earlier in the day), but they may also offer associated discounts.

Step 2: Check in with vendors.

Review contracts and insurance to see if you can reschedule, and if you need to pay any fees to do so. Reach out to your vendors as soon as possible, so they can guide you through your contract and next steps.

Step 3: Let your guests know all the new details.

Once you’ve finalized your new date, let your guests know through your wedding website, physical “Change the Date” cards, or emails and phone calls. Address any concerns about travel refunds and logistics.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. It's OK to be bummed about rescheduling your wedding. To lift your spirits, you might consider moving your bachelorette party, bridal shower or other pre-wedding events into the digital realm.

Decorate your home, prepare some activities and food/drinks, and send out a video chat invitation. You’ll get to keep in touch with your loved ones and keep up the wedding excitement until your big day arrives!
