How to Have a City Hall Wedding in New Jersey | ZOLA

How to Have a City Hall Wedding in New Jersey | ZOLA

City Hall weddings are a great way to say "I Do" quickly, efficiently, and without all the wedding planning stress. You can still embrace the traditions you love while exchanging vows in an intimate setting with a cheaper price point. Save the money you would have spent on a big bash for your honeymoon or a downpayment.

If you live in New Jersey, here are some things to know before you book your city hall ceremony!

Find your city hall

The first step in planning a city hall wedding is choosing the city hall you’d like to exchange nuptials in! Whether you choose your town’s city hall or venture to a different city hall is up to you. Decide what type of aesthetic you’d like featured in your wedding photos when deciding which city hall to say I Do at. For an elevated elopement experience, Jersey City Hall is a dazzling government building made of granite and marble.

There are many different ways to do a city hall wedding. You can elope just you and your spouse, or bring some close family and friends along to celebrate. Decide what type of city hall wedding vibe you are going for and make sure the city hall you choose has the infrastructure to pull off the city hall wedding you are dreaming of.

Do your research

Once you’ve decided on a city hall to exchange your nuptials at, it’s time to do research about your city hall and the marriage requirements there. In order to get married in New Jersey, you’ll need to obtain a marriage license before you say I Do.

Some other things you need to bring in order to obtain your marriage license include:

  • Proof of identity by presenting your driver’s license, passport or state/federal I.D.

  • Proof of your residency.

  • Your birth certificate.

  • Your social security card or social security number.*

  • A witness, 18 years of age or older.

  • The marriage license application fee is $28.

Get a great outfit

While you don’t have to dress in a full gown for your city hall wedding (but you can if you want to!), you should still get a great outfit to wear! Whether you go city sleek or traditional, you’ll want to look your best. Get your hair and makeup done and bring a bouquet along to complete your look.

Send out elopement announcements

Even if you decide to have a small and intimate city hall ceremony, you can still include your extended family and friends by sending out elopement announcements letting them know you’ve tied the knot! This announcement is a great keepsake for your loved ones and can result in some wedding gifts and well wishes from people you love most.

Keep mementos

Your city hall wedding is a special moment between you and the person you love most, so commemorate the occasion by savoring the memories! Hire a wedding photographer to capture the day, and keep track of mementos so you can save them forever. If you invite close family and friends to join you at city hall, set up a wedding guest book for them to sign and have a wedding cake for everyone to enjoy.
