Outdated Wedding Traditions You Can Skip on Your Big Day

Outdated Wedding Traditions You Can Skip on Your Big Day

When couples are planning their wedding with us, they often wonder if people are still doing "classic" wedding customs like playing "The Wedding March" or tossing their bouquet.

During our 17 years in the industry, we've noticed that New Jersey couples are changing, upgrading, or skipping certain traditions that were once considered standard.

The following traditions aren’t as popular as they once were -- but it doesn’t mean you can’t/shouldn’t include them in your plans!

Traditional ceremony music

Some religious institutions have guidelines about what music couples are allowed to use during their wedding ceremony. However, for couples who aren't tying the knot in a house of worship, the sky is the limit for planning their ceremony music. Instead of the traditional "Wedding March" or "Bridal Chorus," couples are going with more modern or meaningful songs for their important ceremony moments.

Garter and bouquet toss

While the garter and bouquet tosses used to be a fun way to get the party going for single wedding guests, some couples feel it’s a bit outdated. If you’re not interested in this tradition, there are many other ways to include your single friends, like a fun competition on the dance floor.

What traditions are couples observing?

The "first look" has become immensely popular with many of our couples. This is a special moment planned between you and your fiance before the ceremony, to see each other in your wedding day best for the very first time. Couples love this because it's a chance for the two of you to have a quiet, private minute together before the whirlwind of wedding activities begins.

Of course, the first dance as newlyweds is still a wedding staple, as are the father-daughter and mother-son dances during the reception.

Check out the Hurricane Productions blog to see more wedding traditions that have waned in popularity, along with a few more that modern couples are embracing. But remember, don't feel pressured to observe any "traditions" that you don't care about, just because others have done it. It's your day -- do what feels right to you!
