Wedding Day Traditions

Wedding Day Traditions

Common Wedding Day Traditions

Over countless years that couples have been tying the knot, many traditions have come and gone however, many have stayed and are commonly practiced to this day.

One great tradition is a “first look.” A first look is when the couple stays separate the entire day leading up to the wedding until a very distinct moment where they each get to see each other for the first time on the day of their wedding.

Another great tradition is the flower bouquet toss. This is when the bride, usually right after cutting their cake, will throw their bouquet backward over their head into a crowd of eager single ladies. It is believed that the woman who catches the bouquet will be the next to be married.

We can't forget about the traditional anniversary dance. The DJ or band will commonly ask that all married couples come out to the dance floor and begin slow dancing. He will then start asking couples to leave the dance floor based on how long they have been married, starting with 1 year or less, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, and so on. This is an awesome tradition because oftentimes the last couple dancing is an elderly couple married for 50 years or more who truly demonstrate the true meaning of patience, loyalty, and love that goes into a marriage.

How to Make Your Own Traditions

Selecting traditions is entirely up to the couple and can reflect their unique tastes and values. Some couples, for example, prefer the center of attention and will have a full ceremonial cake cutting in the center of the dance floor, whereas others feel that getting married in front of everyone was enough attention and they’d prefer to cut their cake off to the side a little more privately.

Some couples know that their parents would love to see some older traditions, so they choose a modern take on older traditions. For example, including a traditional registry and also giving their guests the option to donate monetary gifts to a cause that's near and dear to their hearts.

We've also seen our couples depart from tradition for the wedding party and newlywed entrances, opting for fun ways to be introduced that allow everyone to show off their fun personalities.

A great way to make your own tradition is to simply expand on the things you already do and love as a couple. A food, a place you've traveled, a special person in your lives, a meaningful ritual that draws upon the deep love and connection you have for each other. Whatever it is, taking the time to reflect on what's important to you as a couple will help lay the ground for a very personal wedding experience with traditions that can carry into the life you create together.
