While there is no shortage of wedding venues in New Jersey, selecting the perfect place is a personal, painstaking process. It typically involves a great deal of driving and a great deal of decision making. So, how does a couple choose when the venues are so inviting?

Each couple should check with the facility as far in advance as possible to discuss availability, catering services, cocktail packages, décor, entertainment and handicapped access. Couples may wish to inquire if there is a banquet manager who will assist in planning, if a caterer can provide a wedding cake, and if discounts on local hotel rooms are available for wedding guests.

Booking a location 12 to 18 months in advance is standard, and the earlier the better. Typically the months of May, June, September and October are the busiest for catering venues. Likewise, Saturday evenings are most requested, but Sundays and Fridays are also very popular. It's important for couples to have that kind of flexibility if they have their hearts set on a particular location. Since the venue is the number one decision for many, couples want to make reservations at least a year in advance, especially if the date is not flexible.

The intended location can set the tone for the nuptials, whether formal or casual, outdoor or indoor, held morning, afternoon or night. Couples should also inquire as to what types of personalized services are offered, such as wedding planning, a preferred vendor list, a bridal suite and ethnic menus.

When deciding on a venue, the most important thing for couples to remember is to take time out to consider the options. Try to avoid feeling pressured to decide and choose the venue that feels most comfortable, and it will ultimately be the right one.
