The Historic Mathis House
The Mathis House is located at 600 Main in Downtown Toms River, in the former home of Thomas A. Mathis, who early in the last century was a leading political figure in Ocean County. The mansion, a stunning example of Dutch Revival architecture, was built in 1897. It is a three-story structure, with a grand porch, portico, graceful lawns and the original preserved carriage house. Visitors can use the circular driveway from Main Street to enter through the home’s magnificent wooden front doors, or use the private well-lit parking area located behind the Inn.
The mansion has an impressive foyer, Parlor Room, formal Dining Room, Library, Breakfast Room and Sea Glass Room on the first floor all decorated with exquisite formal seating for the entire Tea Room. The focal point of the entrance includes an impressive wooden oak staircase near the baby grand piano that leads up to the second floor and a gathering room for our five guest suites: Lady Genevieve, Princess Victoria, Countess Stephanie, Lady Samantha and the famous, Queen Alexa, all with private bathrooms and upscale amenities. The beauty continues to the staircase to the third floor where there is another living area and our VIP Guest Suite, dedicated in honor of Sir Thomas Mathis.
The house is surrounded by manicured lawns, stately trees and tasteful landscaping. Indoor and outdoor games, puzzles and books are available. Relax before a crackling fireplace in the Parlor Room or the Breakfast Room. Read a book or listen to music while relaxing in the sitting room or Library.
When making reservations, guests can choose the room in which they would like to stay. Each overnight visit includes a full hot breakfast and home-baked refreshments in the afternoon. Services and other amenities can be arranged, that include full Victorian Afternoon Teas, a fine dining experience and chocolate covered strawberries waiting in your room may also be arranged in advance by the Innkeeper.
Upon arrival each overnight guest and tea room visitor will receive a tour of the Historic Mansion and learn about the rich history and tales of this Hidden Gem in the Heart of Downtown Toms River. It is the mission and vision of the Mathis House to preserve an era of history for many generations to come.
